Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989)


Sakharov was a Soviet physicist who played a major role in the development of the Soviet hydrogen bomb.
He later became a vocal campaigner for nuclear disarmament, and was labelled a dissident by the Soviet Authorities and sent into internal exile.
In 1975, Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace prize.
The more tolerant policies of the Soviet authorities allowed him to same out of exile in 1989.
He died in Moscow shortly afterwards.
