Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

Galileo Galilei, who lived in Italy, is remembered ass the first person to turn a Telescope to the sky and make important astronomical discoveries.
He observed craters on the moon, the bright satellites of Jupiter, Sunspots and other things.
He made himself unpopular, because he lived at a time when belief about the world and the Universe was based on the Bible and on Aristotle's teachings of 2000 years earlier.
For example, Aristotle had said that a heavy weight fell more quickly than a light one,
but Galileo showed that they both fell at the same speed. The Bible said that everything moves around the Earth,
but Galileo's observations showed that the Earth moves round the Sun.
He was imprisoned, and ended his life near Florence under 'house arrest'.
