Freud, Sigmund (1856 – 1939)
Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, then a part of the Austrian empire, in 1856.
He was a neurologist who pioneered psychoanalysis, a technique for examining the motivations and hidden activities of the mind.
Studying in Paris. Freud noted that, in patients suffering from hysteria, physical illness could also appear.
This association of mind with body led him to study patients with metal disorders, and to develop psychoanalysis,
in which patients were encouraged to tell him their dreams and deepest thoughts.
Freud would prompt them to reconsider their dreams and earliest memories, in the belief that these had an effect on their current behaviour.
In the early 20Th century, his theories became extremely popular, having a lasting effect on art, literature,
education and social attitudes. He died in London in 1939.
