Edmund Halley (1956-1742)
Halley was an English astronomer and physicist. He is best known for his discoveries about the orbits of comets.
He calculated that the orbits of comets seen in 1531,1607 and 1682 were very similar and from this predicted that the comet he had observed in 1682 would return in 1758.
The comet appeared on Christmas Day 1758 and was named Halley's Comet in his honour.
