Barbara McClintock (1902-1992)


In 1983 McLintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for her discovery that some genes can change position on the chromosomes.
Earlier, she had shown that when eggs or sperm are produced the chromosomes can break apart and join up again in different combinations of genes in the offspring.
